Washable rugs: who are they right for?

Washable rugs are designs that can be machine washed at home thanks to their thin profile and durable yarns. They make daily life much easier, especially in homes with children and pets.

Who are they right for?

• Pet owners: you deal with hair and odor build-up simply by washing.
• Stain-prone areas such as kitchens and entrances.
• People with allergies: frequent washing reduces dust mites.

What to watch out for when washing

1. Do not exceed the temperature on the product label; most designs are washed at 30 °C.
2. Choose a gentle/delicate program and keep the spin speed low.
3. Do not use bleach or whitening agents; they fade the colors.
4. Do not put it in the tumble dryer. Lay it flat in the shade to dry.
5. Mind your machine's capacity: professional washing is the better choice for large sizes.

Its limits

Being washable does not mean every stain will come out right away. Treating a stain early is still the most effective method; see our rug care article for details.

Pile and use

Washable designs usually have a short pile, which makes them practical in kitchens and work areas where chairs are pulled back and forth. If you want a softer surface, you can lay a thin pad underneath.
