Matching pattern and color: the right rug for your room
Pattern sets the character of a room. Two rugs of the same size can leave a completely different impression because of their pattern.
Plain furniture + patterned rug
If you have a solid-colored sofa, the rug can be the piece that "speaks" in the room. Classic medallion patterns, ethnic motifs or vintage distressed designs work very well in this setup.
Patterned furniture + calm rug
If your sofa is floral or striped, choose a rug in a single tone, with a fine texture or a very light geometric design. When two patterns compete in the same room, the eye gets tired.
The scale of the pattern should suit the room
- In small rooms, a large-scale pattern makes the space feel tighter; small repeating motifs are more balanced.
- In large living rooms, small motifs look like a grey surface from a distance; a bold pattern has more impact.
Matching the style
- Modern minimal: geometric, single-tone or gradient textures.
- Classic: medallion and bordered patterns.
- Scandinavian: light backgrounds, fine lines and diamond motifs.
- Ethnic boho: kilims and flat weaves.
How it relates to the floor
A light rug on dark parquet, or a mid-tone rug on light laminate, creates contrast. If you choose the same tone as the floor, the rug disappears and the room looks flat.
We go into color in more detail in our rug colors article. You can see the pattern options on the products page.
