What to look for in a kids' room rug
In a kids' room, a rug is not just decoration; it is the play floor. That is why the things to look for are different from a living room.
Safety comes first
- Non-slip backing: the most important feature for a running child. If the rug has no non-slip backing, use a pad underneath.
- Thickness: very thick rugs can cause tripping; medium thickness is ideal.
- Edge binding: strong overlock stitching keeps the edges from coming apart.
Easy to clean
Paint, milk, play dough… stains are unavoidable in a kids' room. Short-pile, machine-washable designs make daily life easier. Patterned surfaces show stains less.
Anti-allergy features
Choose densely woven yarns that do not shed, to keep dust mites down. Long-pile rugs tend to hold more dust.
Size and placement
Choose a size that covers the play area; a rug that slides under the bed pulls the room together. 120x180 is usually enough for small rooms and 160x230 for medium-sized ones.
Color and pattern
Very bright colors can be fun in the early years but children may tire of them quickly. Adding colorful toys and textiles on top of a calm base is a longer-lasting solution.
